The heart and soul of an instrument is its sound; each instrument a personality, each player, unique. With piccolos, very little has been available on the market to tailor each performer's experience, until now. Each Pettry Piccolo headjoint is meticulously handcrafted from the finest grenadilla or mopani with sterling silver fittings, with other tonewoods are available by special order.
In the 1970's and 1980's, Albert Cooper delved deep into the acoustics of flutes and headjoint cuts. Very little of that work has been applied to piccolos... until now. Unsatisfied with the acoustics of instruments already on the market, Pettry Piccolos took the entire instrument back to the drawing board.... embouchure holes included. And what we discovered were an array of advancements in piccolo acoustics that opened an entirely new experience to players of every skill level.
Edison: Our first design, and the most popular amongst piccolo specialists. Oval in shape, this cut features unique undercutting that reduces turbulence to create a lush sound with a liquid core that blossoms as it leaves the stage. The Edison is a universally adaptable cut that offers the player endless colors in any playing environment.
Turing Cut: Far too often, piccoloists are required to perform in altissimo registers at unrealistically soft dynamics. Designed to handle the demands of operatic works like Turandot, the Turing does not lack in presence, nor compromise tone in the middle or lower registers. This embouchure cut features the same oval shape and undercutting of the Edison, but features a steep relief on the blowing edge, allowing the player to enjoy optimal response without sacrificing color. It truly 'cracks the code' of piccolo performance.
Curie: The first of our more modern squared designs. Featuring different internal acoustics than the Edison or Turing, this cut is engineered for a large, bold sound with textural complexity derived from minimal overcutting and undercutting. This is a design with moderate resistance and tonal flexibility that allows the performer to paint an aural canvas featuring an endless spectrum of color.
Tesla: Our boldest design. Sharing the same internal acoustics, shape and undercutting of our Curie design, the Tesla features a steep relief on the blowing edge, thereby creating a powerhouse of sound. Agile and flexible, this cut is free-blowing, clear, and can cut through any ensemble without losing the signature color of sound that is the trademark of every Pettry headjoint.
*Wave versions of every cut are available by special order.*
When our company began we studied the impact of a crown on the overall sound and performance of an instrument. Much to our surprise we discovered that the weight of the crown can dramatically alter the response of the instrument and the stability or flexibility of pitch. We then started to observe trends among our artists and found that the heavy, weighted crowns were by far the option of choice among professional and part time players alike. As such, we have made this feature a standard on all of our headjoints.
Every performer is unique. Each artist, one of a kind. If our standard offerings do not meet a need, please let us know so that we may produce a custom order to make your dream a reality. In addition to our wide selection of cuts and woods, we also offer special features like bore liners (to prevent cracking or to change the sound) in Ebonite, various metals, and various woods, or crack-proof headjoints in materials such as Ebonite.
Pettry Flutes & Piccolos aim to offer world class instruments at a competitive price, and also understand the monetary needs of the gigging performer. We get it, we’ve done it too! Keeping this in mind, we like to give artists choices when selecting an instrument.
