Shop Apprentice

Role: Pettry Piccolos seeks to expand operations while also nurturing young aspiring artisans. This is an educational program akin to a paid internship in a corporate office environment. Each position will be tailored to the strengths and needs of each applicant. This position facilitates dual roles within the company as a repair service provider of all top-tier manufacturers and production assistance for custom instrument orders.
Objective: Each Pettry Apprentice should learn baseline skills across all aspects of flute/piccolo manufacturing and repair.
Responsibilities:

Baseline manufacturing: Wood processing for turning, drilling, and reaming. Installation of fittings.

CNC Operation: Occasional operation of CNC Equipment for headjoints, bodies, toneholes, and mechanical needs.

Key-making: Preparation of castings, small parts, etc. with a guarantee of two complete keymaking assignments.

Finishing: preparation of proprietary pads, headcork stoppers, etc as needed.

Repairs: Standard yearly maintenance for all handmade flutes and piccolos with opportunities for overhauls and mechanical restorations.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Undergraduate degree in music with a woodwind as your primary instrument.
Alternate Education: 3-4 year’s experience as a professional woodworker, jeweler, or machinist with experience as a woodwind instrumentalist.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Undergraduate in Flute Performance
Diploma in Instrument Repair.
Preferred Work Experience: (Variable). With a degree as a flutist, 1-2 years of work experience as a woodwind or flute repair specialist. Without a degree, 3-4 years of work experience as a woodwind repair technician or comparable experience as a wood worker or apprentice jeweler.
Compensation:
This position is paid by commission based on skill and experience with rates expected to start at or above the industry standard of 50% for all repairs. Labor during apprenticeship training will include work to produce one Pettry Piccolo that will be yours to keep or sell upon the completion of training; a value up to $14k USD. Further compensation after training will be negotiated at that time along industry piece-rate practices.
